I believe that people are more accountable when they take ownership of a project or assignment. Allowing staff to share their talents with others is imperative and providing opportunities for them to work in an area that they are passionate about is inspiring. Opportunities at Divisional Mtgs, PD Days and monthly staff meetings are given to staff to facilitate the learning and to celebrate and showcase the work being done to meet the varied student needs. Teachers and staff would recognize that they too, have talents to share and explore.
Lastly, feedback is critical and needs to be offered in a way that respects the dignity of all. Accountability is not about knowing who to punish when things go wrong. I believe that this practice creates fear and when we create fear, no one will be willing to step up, speak out or try something new or innovative to support desired outcomes. Risk-taking will be lost. Instead, I try to assure that teachers and students are participating in their own appraisals and assessments so they can better make adjustments to meet expectations and goals. A school environment that is accountable is one in which people seek feedback because they know it is intended to improve the process and add to their knowledge. I currently offer multiple ways to offer and solicit feedback from others. Weekly check ins, group conversation sharing, being present at Divisional mtgs and staff surveys are all ways in which I solicit and offer feedback. I want to keep the dialogue going and not stifle conversation. Besides creating the right environment for accountability, leaders need to build trust, value individuals and minimize fear. They need to create an environment of sharing and collaboration in addition to offering the opportunity to staff and students to grow in both their personal and professional capacities as well.
